SSFC Women’s May “can’t wait to get started” following pre-season

South Shields Women's season begins in just under two weeks' time, and Natalie May says she "can't wait to get started".

The Mariners' pre-season preparations couldn't have gone any better in terms of results, given they won all four of their friendlies.

Perhaps most impressive of them all was the 11-0 victory against seventh-tier Whitehaven AFC Ladies on Sunday.

While pre-season isn't all about results, it can go a long way in building up momentum and morale ahead of the league opener.

Speaking afterwards, the player of the match spoke of her delight as to the manner in which Shields played.

“The game today was brilliant,” she said.

“Every player played their part in today's game; it’s good to see everyone getting decent minutes in the game ready to start us up for the new season.”

After three weeks of playing away from home, she felt it was a relief to be back at Harton Welfare.

May added: “It felt good being back on home ground. We put on a show for our fans.

“We want to thank all the fans that came down as they all played a massive part in today’s win.”

The past month has been spent developing the team’s control with and without the ball, so the team can play a new style of football this season.

May thinks the team has made progress not only on the training field but at matches too.

She continued: “It’s been a positive month – pre-season is all about learning new things and gaining confidence and I believe we have improved massively as a team.

“We have come together as a team and the new players have fitted in so well.”

Finally she had a message on behalf of the team, as pre-season draws to a close.

“Me and the team are ready for the new season. We’re excited and we can’t wait to get started!”
