South Shields Women host Sunderland West End Ladies in the quarter-final of the DCFA Women’s Cup this Sunday (1:45pm kick-off).
It may be third time lucky for the Mariners, who have been waiting for a fixture for a number of weeks following their elimination from the Women’s FA Cup against Liverpool Feds.
Although fixture postponements have prevented the lasses from playing a league game before the winter break, there is the chance to progress in a prestigious cup competition this week.
They will face a strong Sunderland West End side who currently sit sixth in the NERWFL Premier Division table on 12 points, the same as Shields, but having played one extra game.
Supporters will no doubt remember September’s stunning 4-4 draw at Herrington Welfare Grounds – watch back the key moments from that game below.
West End have defeated Horden Community Welfare Women (a 5-0 away win) and Gateshead Rutherford Ladies (a 3-0 win at home) to get to this stage.
Shields reached the quarter-final after being given a bye following Chester-le-Street Town Ladies Development and Ferryhill Miners United Ladies’ withdrawal in each round to date.
Alex’s thoughts
Head coach Alex Miller discussed this week's talking points in this interview – listen to what she had to say above!
Jaz’s thoughts
We spoke to Jaz Elliott-Wood this week to help preview Sunday’s planned return to action.
“Cup games are always a lot of fun,” she said, “and we know better than anyone that anything can happen, so we need to go out there and be our best.
“I know the girls are ready to get back out there and are eager to fix what went wrong a couple of weeks ago.”
