About the SSFC Academy

Elite level development at South Shields FC

The SSFC Academy is the elite tier of our Home Academy: a full-time football development programme for players aged 16 to 19 who are serious about a career in professional or semi-professional football.

Players in the SSFC Academy train alongside the club’s first team squad. They benefit from access to high-level facilities, high-quality coaching from experienced staff, and a potential pathway into first team football at South Shields FC and beyond.

Academy offer

Everything a young player needs to succeed

The SSFC Academy is built around four pillars that reflect what elite player development actually requires. Technical talent alone is not enough. We develop the complete footballer.

Elite Training

Up to 12 hours a week of unrivalled training from expert coaches, including specialist technical coaching sessions, and strength and conditioning.

Competitive Football

Players represent South Shields FC in high-level competitions such as the National League Under-19 Alliance, ECFA Category One and National Cup competitions.

Education Support

Players can select to study sport courses at levels one to five, or study three A-level subjects alongside the Academy coaching sessions and competitive games.

First Team Pathway

The Academy is designed to produce players for the senior game, with a number of graduates going on to play for the first team and other clubs at professional and semi-professional level.

Programme structure

Strength & conditioning

Our team of certified strength and conditioning specialists offers personalised support to students. We design tailored training programs focused on enhancing physical growth, boosting performance, and reducing the risk of injury.

Physiotherapy

Students can access premium physiotherapy care, including injury diagnosis and tailored rehabilitation plans designed to support recovery and long-term physical health.

Analysis

Our performance analysis tools are designed to accelerate student development. Through reviews and collaborative team workshops, students can utilise video feedback.

Dual career

In partnership with Sunderland College, we offer diverse academic pathways, including A-Levels, BTECs, and technical trades, to give students a head start in the job market.

USA scholarship

For students interested in college football in the States, we provide support for students targeting USA football scholarships.

Our Academy gives the North East’s brightest young talent a genuine launchpad for the future. We treat our players as both elite athletes and ambitious students, combining full-time football development with flexible academic pathways.

In partnership with Sunderland College, our academic programs are tailored to fit around your training schedule. Students can select from Level 1-5 Sports qualifications, traditional A-Levels, or vocational BTECs. We also offer specialised technical pathways, including Engineering and Electrical Installation. Sunderland College backs this with an exceptional reputation, including an 88% A-Level pass rate and a 96% achievement rate for Level 3 technical and vocational qualifications. Players train across Wolf Competitions Stadium and a multi-million-pound Bede Campus, utilising pro-level facilities like a sports science lab, strength studios, and performance analysis suites.

Joining the SSFC Academy

Places on the SSFC Academy are highly competitive and limited each season. If you believe you have the talent and the commitment to be part of the programme, we'd encourage you to get in touch early.

Trial invitation

Shortlisted players are invited to a trial session with our senior coaching staff.

Offer & enrolment

Successful applicants are contacted by our Technical Director, Chris Bell. We'll work with you to complete all enrolment, welfare, and education documentation before the start of the programme.
