South Shields Women scored twice in the final 10 minutes to see off Hebburn Town Women in the Women’s FA Cup Second Round Qualifying on Sunday.
A cagey game for the most part, the deadlock was finally broken at Wolf Competitions Stadium when Tianna Hill was sent through on goal with eight minutes remaining, before Eve Jones followed it up a minute into added-time.
The result puts the lasses in the hat for the next round, which will see them visit Wirral Phoenix FC in two weeks’ time.
Shields did start off the better team, and their first chance came in the seventh minute when Hill whipped a cross into the box which Amelia Howe spilled, but Milly Cairns couldn’t keep the ball in play near the byline.
A Hebburn cross later in the first half rattled the crossbar, but some excellent defensive work from Jen Wootten prevented the imminent danger from materialising.
It was scoreless after 45 minutes, but the game sprung into action following the restart.
Daisy Sutton charged through a pack of Hornets players, however Annece Legg – who was brought on early into the second half – made a touch which just evaded her.
Sophie Allison perhaps came closest when she ran past Brooke Ford and aimed for the bottom corner, with her effort narrowly missing the target.
Anna Yeakey was called into action to make a heroic save from a one-on-one, a moment which seemed significant, and could have had a big impact on the final result.
However, it was Hill who got on the scoresheet for the hosts after D. Sutton played her in, a sweet finish into the right side of the net late on.
Jones, who has now scored in every competitive game this season, didn’t want to feel left out and she later netted the goal which confirmed the victory against a hard-working Hebburn side.
Up next is a visit to Harrogate Town Women as NERWFL Premier Division action resumes.
